Study to Identify Potential Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showperson Sites

A 2007 study concluded that 31-45 extra residential pitches and 10 more transit pitches for Gypsies and Travellers were needed by 2016 in Cheshire West and Chester.

It also identified a need for an additional 10 plots for Travelling Showpeople in the borough. Cheshire West and Chester Council commissioned a site search study which was completed in August 2011.

Having permanent sites provides certainty for everyone. A lack of permanent Gypsy and Traveller sites in the borough has led to a number of developments being permitted on a temporary basis in the green belt, contrary to normal planning policies. This has led to local tensions, along with considerable costs in enforcement and appeal proceedings.

The Location Plans in Annexes F, H and J are separate PDF files, available below. North West includes the Ellesmere Port, Helsby and Chester areas; North East includes the Frodsham, Northwich and Winsford areas; South includes the Malpas and Tattenhall areas. No sites in the southern part of the borough were taken through to the survey stage. You can zoom into the maps to get a clearer view of the site locations.
