Cemetery rules consultation

This consultation is now closed.

Background

Cheshire West and Chester Council manages the following cemeteries:

  • Blacon Cemetery/Crematorium, Blacon Avenue, Chester
  • Neston Cemetery, Raby Park Road, Neston
  • Overpool Cemetery, Rivacre Road, Ellesmere Port
  • Overleigh Cemetery, Overleigh Road, Handbridge
  • Wharton Cemetery, Crook Lane, Winsford

Our aim is to provide cemeteries which are safe, peaceful and respectful places. To help us achieve this we have rules which apply to the five cemeteries. The rules cover topics such as expected behaviour when visiting a cemetery as well as controls on the size and type of commemorative items that can be placed on graves.

We are reviewing the rules to make sure that they are up to date and this consultation forms a part of the review. We recognise that bereavement is a sensitive and emotive subject and have taken care when developing the survey questions to minimise any distress that the questions could potentially cause. You are, of course, free to ignore any questions that you do not wish to answer.

Some of the cemetery rules are designed to implement legal requirements and we have not asked specific questions about these elements, but have instead focused on the areas where there is opportunity to change and revise the rules.
When we revise the rules we will also improve the way they are written so that they are easier to read and understand.
